I'm not looking for FotM but a weapon that I would probably stick with. I do have some 'no skill required' CR I think from the email/newsletter giveaways so I could practise with those maybe before I set my choice in stone. If the new bonuses to the Minmatar logi dropsuit are correct that sounds nice and more useful than a hacking bonus.
Try the weapon out.
The CR may not be your style. (I'm not sure it is my style at all.) Here's what I'll recommend:
Create an Alt.
On the Alt, buy level 1 with RR, CR, AR, Shotgun and MD and SMG
Pick up some Militia Rep tools, and drop a couple Militia armor plates on the 'Freebie suit'
Run around in the baseline freebie militia fit you get, with that Rep tool, and the associated weapons and try the weapons out.
Determine which style you like.
Have you figured out which weapon you like?
(Is it the shotgun? If so, you need to go back and keep working with the weapons to get a better feel for them.)
Run that on your main. |

On the other hand, I highly disapprove of the Alt Accounts as the weapon specs are being buffed and nerfed with every update. the first level of any weapon is cheap so just using passive SP to use that one level is easy.
Just My 2cents
The issue is that firing style is completely different. (We're looking at Full v/s Semi-auto at a minimum.)
Players need to feel how a 'weapon responds' and whether it works for any clone soldier is a personal thing. It is all a YMMV. I'm glad you like the CR. I happen to be fond of the Scrambler Rifle and the AR (and occasionally the SMG.) Again, YMMV.
If you don't want to test on an alt, I'm not going to make you. I'm just going to recommend that people remember that they have it as an option. (Otherwise CCP wouldn't let us create 'alt' characters on our PSN account.)
For Logi weapons your choices are really limited to: AR (Militia) SMG (Militia) Shotgun (Militia) Rail Rifle (No Militia) Combat Rifle (No Militia) Laser Rifle (No Militia) Scrambler Rifle (No Militia) Mass Driver (No Militia) Flaylock (Yeah ... not really good as a main weapon.)
You want someone with 500k starting ISK to spend over 63K of it on "testing weapons" on their main character? Along with Skillbook costs and up to 675K ISK in weapons just to test this out? That's silly.
As for the "only 1500 or so ISK" all of your Standard level weapons run that much as well.
Get your BPO 'Medic/Frontline/etc' fits that already has an AR and an SMG. If you pick up a Gallente 'alt' for testing, and some Militia fit armor plates (to slow it down) you can get the feel and be a n00b and decide if you even like this style of play.
Testing and iteration allows you to understand what you enjoy most about the game. Spending SP that you can't get refunded if you 'make a mistake' can be more than painful. It can be completely useless.
